John Sharp opened our business in 1941 as a watch repair shop. In 1944, his son-in-law, Melvin (Mel) Maddux, and his family arrived in San Benito County and became John’s partner. That same year, they moved into a larger store and became John Sharp's Jewelers. Mel bought out his father-in-law in 1947 and changed the name to Maddux Jewelry. When Mel's son, Rick, was about 10 years old, he began his career in the store gift wrapping purchases for customers as well as doing some clock repair and later jewelry repair. Rick and his wife, Linda, purchased the store from Mel in 1987 and have been running it ever since.
Maddux Jewelry specializes in the unique and unusual. We stock pieces from small design firms or individuals such as Mark Schneider, Elma Gil, Fredric Duclos, Arlee Kasselman and more! We are known for our quality repairs and in-house custom design.
We are a member of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, we are a member of the Hollister Downtown Association and Rick Maddux is serving as the current president. Also, we support various local charities throughout the year such as our local American Cancer Society’s 'Relay for Life' fundraising event.
